Should I record at home or at a studio?
I'm trying to make a full-length solo album of near-professional audio quality. The sound is acoustic with electronic beats. From my previous projects, I'd have to say that I have a knack for DSP and creating "space," but my mixes always seem to suffer from poor sound quality even though I thought they sounded good on the monitors. I'm not sure what the weak link is in the chain.. the source sound? The mix? The mastering process?
Ideally i would like to record the whole thing at home and perhaps have it mixed and/or mastered by a professional. But I'm not sure if that will bring my music to the fidelity where it needs to be. Here is an example of a previous project:

I recorded these in Pro tools with my Digidesign 002 rack and later mastered them with Reason's Record. I feel like this is the best I can get from this setup, although I always here about people recording professional quality albums at home. What would you do in my position?
Hmmm. The recordings sound pretty good to me.
My constructive comments:
More de-essing needs to be done. A lot more.
What type of mic are you using for vocals? It sounds like you either EQing some low/mid freqs out or that the mic is not getting them.
Auto-Tune. Ya I know, not like everyone else uses it but like it was meant to be used. Just fix little pitchy stuff here and there.
Needs more bass. What you are doing is not my type of thing, but it certainly lacks in the low end.
Perhaps more layers in the digital stuff would help as well.
For mastering, you might give Ozone a try in ProTools. The sonic maximizer is great in that it will bring your volume up a lot, and fill in the blank spots on the EQ. Creates more presence.
My band using ProTools and an m-audio box (there is a player at the bottome of the page). Mastered by me using Ozone. It is at least twice as loud as your recordings. We don;t layer what we can't do live, so it is very raw compared to most popular "metal". Saying that, it still sounds more "full" that your recording with vocal layers and harmonies (hope that makes sense).

I think you are good enough at what you are doing to mix and master yourself. You would have to spend some bucks to get someone else to make it sound any better. Stick with your own recordings, and give Ozone a shot. I think your weak link is the mastering, and possibly your studio monitors. It is hard to find monitors that are nuetral enough to sound good on everything.
Also, you may need to try different mixes and masters for CD quality waves and MP3s. MP3s just suck the life out of everything we do.
