How can I determine the noise floor of my Yeasu FT-450 ham radio?
My house currently is not grounded. There may be a few of my electrical systems that have a ground but the majority of the wiring in my house is 2 wire with no ground. I'm about to have my service upgraded from 100 amp to 200 amp and would like to get a before and after snapshot of the noise levels of my house. I think I can do this with the Yeasu FT-450 if I can determine its noise floor. I will be slowly rewiring my house.
Big Mac - An easy way to test if the house grounding will help with your noise floor would be to make your own ground. Many hams use their own grounding system instead of relying on the electrical ground. It is not that hard to do....go to a home or electrical store and buy a ground rod, hammer it into the ground near your radio room and then run a wire to the rig. Tune the rig to a quiet frequency and connect the wire - if you hear the background noise go down, you know your ground will be effective. Sometimes a wire attached to a copper cold water pipe works too.
To really test the noise floor on your radio would require a really good calibrated signal generator and a very good VTVM with a db scale. To me it is not worth that effort...connecting a wire is much easier and will give you a real idea of what the ground will do for you.
