i want to build a completely custom guitar with all my specifications. this will be my very first electric guitar build . ive been playin guitar for a little over 11 years so this is deffinately not my "first guitar", just my first homemade one..i need to know what tools im going to need, (if you can) how much they cost usually, and brand names to look out for...etc... im planning on building a les paul styled guitar with a solid mahogony neckthrough body, quilted maple top, ebony fretboard, tonepros post bridge, schaller straplocks, gibson tony iommi signature humbucker, gibson angus young signature humbucker, gibson deluxe tuners. what are the tools i will need for routing, glueing, sanding, and what not. thanks everybody so much.
Frankly, what would help is some experience in woodworking, and some mechanical background or craft work. Of which, I've enjoyed doing over the decades.
But to really think about putting something together first off, and get the feel for the assembly, I'd highly recommend you to get a hold of a complete guitar building 'kit'. Buying books and manuals are certainly helpful, and a little frightening at first.
Solid body kits are on the market and one may think that the final price may be a bit higher than some (complete guitars) brands already made for the consumer, keep in mind they provide some of the best materials, hardware and woods available according to the customer's specifications. This is an introduction to the world of custom guitars.
You may even want to think about picking up parts of the guitar as replacement elements (from the racks from music/guitar store parts supplies) as you go, but in the long run, the kits provide everything, some even the tools, clamps and glues. (And always completely read the instructions first.)
Another approach is to go buy a real junk el cheapo guitar (which I have done), take the thing apart to study, think of how you can improve upon it, and learn from the experience before tackling any 'custom' level. This may prevent not becoming discouraged or frustrated later with such an important and valuable project as having a custom guitar to admire and play later, made by your own hands.
Lots of fun ahead that will require, time, patience, energy and thought.
