I'm a guitar noob and just got one from the store. I set the mode to guitar and pick the thickest low E string as per the instructions and it says 5 in red. I change to chromatic mode?? and it says G and turns green meaning its in tune. The instructions are vague to me, also which way is tighting and which one is loosening? Last time I turned it the wrong way and ended up breaking the string:(
Thank you all for your answers. Each of your answers had some great info.I think a lot of it had to do with me not understanding the chromatic scale. When the guy in the store showed me it was already on the correct note just needed to be slightly tuned. Mine however was showing a completely different note and that confused me. I figured it out finally:)
I am not familiar with your particular tuner but if it's saying that your E string is tuned to G then try loosening the string slightly (making the pitch lower) and your tuner should then eventually tell you that you're in the E range. Then tune it until your tuner say's it's right on target. If you still don't think that it sounds right then go online and find a video of someone playing all 6 strings (easily found on youtube) and compare the sound of your low e string to theirs. I'm sort of a noob as well but I changed all of my strings last week and didn't have much trouble getting them in tune with my chromatic tuner. Hope this helps.
