Home made hot plate from an old stoves heating element?
I want to build a hot plate out of an old stoves heating coil, I was thinking I could just attach an a/c power cord to a step up transformer (because the element uses 240 volts rather than 120) and put a rheostat or potentiometer on it for the heat adjuster and put it all in a safe enclosure. I was just wondering If I just used 120 volts rather than 240 if it would still work and just not be as hot? I want it to be able to boil about 6 quarts of water fairly easily. Also, if I need the transformer, where can I get one for a good price? By the way, I have worked with electricity before and I know how to do it safely.
As stated you have an Amps problem.
A 5 gallon propane tank and with a propane burner would do great job. 5 gallons last a long time.
You could find the burner and regulator from a used turkey fryer or camp stove.
