I went to GC yesterday and noticed that some of the guitars had be detuned, the action was too low (or bowed neck), etc. Do they set up the guitar for you when purchase it? Or do the just say here you go and hope you know what to do?
Is it different ordering online as to going to the store and buying? (Guitar Center)
And if the neck is bowed, is that something that could be fixed with adjustments? Or is that permanent?
It depends on the type of guitar you buy. If you check out the expensive ones up high on the wall, they are all set up pretty well. People who buy those generally know the difference. Also, when you're spending $1000 and up, you have a bit of leverage and can insist that adjustments be made.
If you're buying a mid or low priced guitar, you pretty much have to take what you get... but I would not leave the store with an unplayable axe. Their return policy is pretty liberal, so you could try to set the guitar up and return it if it doesn't work out... but why bother?
I'd also be a bit leery of the techs at a mass-market place like that.
If you buy online, you're completely on your own... It's not set up and if anything is wrong with the axe you have to ship it back.
Be aware though that you can negotiate price at GC. IMO, that's the only thing those stores are good for. If you happen to see something you like, hammer them good on the price and don't look back when you leave!
Otherwise, shop at a reputable guitar shop with good techs and pride in their work.
