How to remove guitar pickups?
I need to remove the pickups and input jack from an old squire strat to use for an experiment, but i dont want the volume/tone knobs or the pickup selector switch. I also only want one pickup. Is it possible to do this and end up with a functioning pickup connected to the input? And i dont care if i damage the guitar.
Josh, just remove the pickguard assembly and cut the wires from the desired pickup at the selector switch (hot lead) and volume control housing (signal ground) terminations. Remove the two height-adjustment screws to release the pickup. Cut the two wires from the output jack at the points where they attach to the pickguard assembly. Remove the output jack dress plate, and pull the wires free from the guitar body. Connect (solder and insulate) the pickup hot lead to the "tip" output jack termination, and the pickup signal ground lead to the "ring" output jack connection. This will complete a very basic circuit with no volume or tone controls. I would strongly suggest you mount these parts to a suitable non-conductive base, so you are not touching the components or wiring during actual use. If you do not understand any of this, or are not fully aware of the electrical current involved, you should definitely not be attempting this exercise. Please employ the appropriate cautions.
