What's the best method for teaching yourself to play acoustic guitar?
I took guitar lessons for a semester in college 4 years ago, but our sessions were only 30 minutes and I was a complete beginner, so I didn't feel like I was ever able to spend enough time with the teacher to learn much. I can barely even remember what little bit I did learn. In other words, I'd basically be starting from scratch. I have a very nice acoustic Glen Burton guitar, and I hate that it's just sitting there not getting used. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to teach yourself, using books, online sources, or anything else?

the first question you have to ask yourself is do you want t learn to read music or do you just want to be able to play a bit. if you have no interest in reading notation, most of the lesson books you will see wont be that helpful. if you want to read, get the mel bay or bill leavitt series of lesson books. songs are stupid and childish but are great practice for reading and getting the feel of the guitar. they will also "force" you to use proper fingerings which is a necessary skill whether you read or not. bill leavitt series is a little better than mel bay. if you dont want to read, get yourself a chord encyclopedia, a book on scales and a basic music theory book. i would reccomend taking some lessons, even if you want to learn basically on your own just to have an interpreter. depending on how far you want to take it, music can be like learning chinese. learn your basic major and minor chords, major, minor, pentatonic and blues scales and ACTIVELY listen to as much music as you can, meaning dont just listen and smile, try to take what you learn and identify what the guitar player is doing. what kinds of chords or scales are being played, etc... good luck and im around if you have any questions along the way
