What type of boots can I put on my horse?
I have a stubby Fjord gelding and he has short but stocky cannon bones. So his sport boots dont fit correctly and splint boots are either too big or too small. I have just started gaming with him, are there any other types of boots that you can suggest? I keep his fetlock hair since he is a draft so it makes polo wraps uncomfortable for him. Am I SOL? thanks
Also, could someone explain the difference between the different kinds of leg boots? I've used polo's for years, but never really known the main purpose.
I'll list the purposes of each and let you decide on what you think is best for him.
Boots and wraps provide support by absorbing shock and compressing the leg to transfer shock farther up the leg to reduce lots of impact on one area of the leg. Instead it is just a little shock through out the leg. They provide protection from direct injury such as a hoof hitting one leg etc.
Polo wraps: These provide approx. 1% support. They don't provide much protection and are mainly for light work that just needs a little extra support. I use them on my horse when she has stocked up and the heat from the polos plus the increased blood flow due to exercise will get rid of it quickly!
Brushing boots: These provide no support and only protection (mainly on the inside of the leg).
Galloping boots: These provide no support and only protection (mainly on the back of the leg).
Splint boots: There is a bone attached to the back of the cannon bone called the splint bone. When under stress or if direct injury is to happen it can fracture and a hard bony lump called a split will form over it (this is the body's natural reaction to pile calcium over the area to prevent re-injury). The splint boots provide protection and support to the splint bone BUT NOT to any other part of the leg.
As for all purpose boots - they are the same as brushing boots.
Open front boots are for jumping horse's mainly. They provide protection and support. But they are open in the front so when a horse hits a fence they feel it and this "teaches" them not to hit fences because it hurts. But this really is dumb because horse's hit fences for exact reasons, not just because they don't know better. But regardless, they provide protection and support.
Closed front boots (aka medicine boots) provide support and protection all around (unlike open fronts that don't in the front of the boot).
Porter wraps with saratoga wraps over provide support and some protection and are waterproof. They hold very little water.
Bandage liners: Are for use under polos for added support and protection.
So maybe porter wraps with saratogas over is a good option if you are encountering water (?) or polos with bandage liners under are a good idea.
