I currently own a Washburn Renegade fitted with emg pickups (forgot what kind) that have silver and gold writing.I would like an idea of which guitar to get next. I would like a guitar that is suitable for most styles of music, mostly rock. Also, don't mention any super expensive vintage crap (no offense), cuz my parents probably won't let me get it.
The expensive PRS guitars are great for playing a variety of music. But the PRS SE models are crap. They're not real PRS... they are Samick Enterprise.
A comparable guitar to the PRS McCarty would be a Schecter C-1 series guitar. I have 2, and they are great. I ended up swapping the pickups out after awhile, but I do that on every guitar. Schecter is considered to be the "poor man's" PRS.
Anyways, what you want to look for is the following:
1. Nice playability - Does the guitar feel comfortable when you play? Is the neck smooth and feel good, or does it feel like the strings are too close/far apart. Are their any "dead frets"?
2. Sound Quality - This is HUGE. DO NOT Plug the guitar in to hear how it sounds. Listen to it, try to hear if the neck buzzes. Listen to the natural tone from the guitar. I went with Schecter because the tone sounded better than the cheaper PRS guitars. THe PRS sounded dull and muddy... lifeless. The one thing I don't like about Schecter is that the fretboards seem to be lower quality than say, a nicer Fender, or the real PRS guitars... but that is understandable.
3. Build Quality - You know about this after looking at a bunch of guitars, or talking to people, or reading reviews. I had bad luck with Ibanez and LTD. The LTD had loose knobs and the hardware tarnished. The Ibanez just sucked... but I got a bad model. Check out the Ibanez RG series guitars and compare them to the Schecters.
4. Setup costs - It's usually another $50 to setup a guitar. Schecter and PRS are the only 2 companies that setup their guitars at the factory. All other guitars do not come with a pro setup... not Fender, not Gibson.... not anyone. Part of that is due to the fact that every guitarist has their own idea of how it should be setup, but it's nice to know that a pro has already set the guitar up to a certain standard.
These questions are what you should ask yourself when buying a guitar. Get your price range and go to a few guitar stores and ask to see everything in that price range. Play all of them for a few minutes and narrow down your search to whatever feels and sounds best.
Don't worry about how they sound plugged in, because you can always swap out the pups at a later time. I like my Schecter with a Dimarzio Tonezone in the bridge. Seymour Duncan JB/59 is another setup that I have, which is also a great setup for guys who like to play different genres.
