Need to boost my guitar for solos and lead lines! Any pedal suggestions?
I play alternative rock with a tube amp and my rhythm guitarist and I play at the same volume, but I need a line boost for my solos and lead lines to cut through. Some pedals I've been looking at are MXR Micro Amp, MXR Boost/Linedriver, Ibanez tube screamer, and Seymour Duncan Pickup Booster. But I'm having trouble figuring out the differences between these. HELP PLEASE! thanks
The MXR unit are very similar to each other. The main difference is that the Line Driver provides a direct out to send to the PA. If you're not playing bass or acoustic guitar, you don't need this function.
The MXRs and Seymour Duncan unit are all clean boost devices. That is, they simply boost the signal level from your guitar to the front end of your amp.
The Tube Screamer is a distortion box. There's a circuit in there that deliberately clips the signal (like an overdriven tube). It also applies some equalization to the signal...boosting the mids a bit (which helps you cut through).
What works for you is very dependent on your guitar and how you have your amp set. If you're running your preamp in (gain) very high, then adding a boost will only make your tone more distorted (and not necessarily louder).
An EQ in the effects loop is a very good idea. Even an EQ before the amp (with the mids boosted and the lows cut) will help you to be heard during solos.
A trick that a lot of pro bands use is that the rhythm section backs off just a bit during the solos. It doesn't take much, and can make a lot of difference. Try it.
Good luck to you.
