Help with buying guitar strings?

Hi! I live in the UK and I'm looking for a light gauge guitar string for an old guitar I have at home. I know I don't need a nylon type string but a metal one, I think they are called "bronze 80/20" (I'm assuming this refers to it's alloy).

I'm looking at a couple of strings at the moment and I was wondering what the ".008" stands for in the name: "Ernie Ball .008 single plain guitar string"...

... is it the Gauge or what? also what sort of thickness would that give me?

If I wanted to buy a very very light gauge (and reasonably priced) guitar string which one would you recommend me?

If your guitar is an acoustic guitar you should be looking at 80/20 light acoustic guitar strings. They will have a gauge of .012 to about .053 from thinnest to thickest string. I really like Martin SP strings on my acoustics. They're about $7 a set here in the US. The .008 Ernie Ball strings you mentioned are electric guitar strings and are super light strings. I've never used anything below .009 on my electric guitars and prefer .010 gauge.

FYI, the gauge is in thousandths of an inch, so a set of 9's would be .009 inches thick (referring to the thinnest string in the set).

So, your question is a bit confusing because you mention 80/20 bronze, which is typically the alloy used for acoustic strings, but you then mention the .008 Ernie Ball strings, which are an electric guitar string and not an 80/20 alloy.

I'd suggest you go to GuitarCenter.com and look at the string options. If you want very light acoustic strings they have a lot of them to choose from. Just make sure you get acoustic strings for an acoustic guitar and electric strings for an electric guitar.
