Would it effect the sound dramatically if I painted my acoustic guitar?
It's a Lauren. It's cheap, but its pretty durable.
it depends on the material you paint with, how much area you paint, what area you paint, how much paint you put in areas...if you put light amounts of magic marker colorings then no it wouldn't affect the guitars overall sound with any sort of audible degradation...those markers are usually acetone based so will wreck nearly all finishes and leave you with an ugly mess...on unfinished wood and polyester finishes though they can be a good choice...there is also acrylic paints used often in crafts and hobbies...they would serve you well and i would only advise against large clumps...like a van gogh painting...

they are used to paint clear RC lexan bodies and are very light, durable and do not buildup or leave large lumps...
you can clearly see from the links below that many artists have achieved wonderful results using the right materials and the right amount on the guitar...you can also consider my old wall hanger....

It was 'retired' for the lack of a better term and became my ornamental artwork...having played many a year with her...I couldn't let her go and just painted her nice one night...if you get a new guitar then consider doing the same...they make awesome memorabilia later in life...and who knows...if you get world famous people would pay buckets of money for your painted guitars...
yes if you do it wrong it will affect the sound of the guitar...if you do it right...it would hardly be noticeable to even a trained ear...
