TELE VS STRATOCASTER?
would buying a squier telecaster be a better investment than buying a cheap used squier strat for 70 bucks and popping in a set of tex mex pickups and some gotoh tuners. with the tele i was just gonna change the tuners and the pots and selector. moneys not a big issue in this cus these are pretty affordable guitars and parts

Get the cheap stratocaster used at that price. It only cost $150 to set it up with good pickups like Seymour Duncan. Tuners are cheap. The advantage is that the used one already has some age to it and more broken-in , sound-wise.
Just make sure the neck is not warped and by that I mean not twisted. It can be bowed slightly and that is easily adjustable. But if it is twisted, you need a new neck and that becomes a useless purchase.
edit....the Tex mex are good but have you tried them with THAT squier Strat ?
Also, be careful on the necks. Some Fender American necks DO not fit on Squier series and vice-versa. You will need to measure from the 1rst fret to the 12th, and from the 12th to the bridge which NEED to be equal in distance.
