Can someone give me tips on creating a planted fishtank?
I've had freshwater fish tanks off and on all my life and now I have saltwater tank with fish and corals, so I'm by far a newbie.
Right now I have a Biocube 8 all-in-one tank not being used and I'd love to make it into a planted tank. As I'm looking for info on the net I come across people using c02, reactors, controllers, needle valves, and whatever else and now I'm overwhelmed! Is all this stuff really necessary? I've had some live plants in fishtanks before and all I ever did for the tanks was adding water for top off, changing the filter cartridge, cleaning algae and siphoning gravel.
Does anyone have any advice for me? My saltwater tank takes a lot of time and energy. Plus it isn't cheap so I don't want to get into anything crazy with a planted tank. I have the pump and filter which is built into the tank. I know I'll need substrate and plants (of course). What else would I need?
I think my bulbs are 10,000K
All the mess with CO2 is one route, but it doesn't sound like that's the direction you want to go. Just make sure the lights in the BioCube are of a usable spectrum (5,500-6,700K) for plants, and there really isn't a whole lot to worry about. Start the tank off with some fast growing plants like Water Sprite and Hornwort, and slowly work into more decorative plants like lilies, Aponogetons, Crypts, Swords, etc. Just be sure to stick with easy-to-keep plants... For a simple planted tank, here are my plant recommendations:
Swords, Crypts, Bacopa, Sagitaria, Vallisneria, Lilies, Aponogetons, Java Moss, Java Fern, Anubias, Pennywort, Hygrophila species, Anacharis, Water Sprite, Hornwort, Ludwigia, and Banana Plants just to name a few. Be sure to AVOID terrestrial or bog plants commonly sold as aquatic (Mondo Grass, Acorus, Aqua Fern, Umbrella Plant, Brazilian Sword, or any plant with green and white leaves).
EDIT: I'd swap out the 10,000K bulbs for something between 5,500 and 6,700K (as I said before)... 10,000K isn't really conducive to growing plants, as there is too much in the blue end of the spectrum, which is more suitable for growing algae. However, this is a common spectrum for non-planted tanks, as it is a very crisp white as opposed to the off white color in the bulbs that are better for plants.
