Sustain pedal? Needed in metal? Help...?
I have heard back and forth that a sustain pedal is needed and then others say it is not good to have. I play hard rock/metal. Dropped C tuning, Jackson guitar with Seymour Duncan Blackouts. I got a Crate half-stack, Line6 X3 Live and a Digitech distortion. I hear that a compressor/sustainer will give me better palm mutes and pinch harmonics. What's accurate?! Stupid double-talk....
Compressor/sustainer is a useful tool to have in your pedal collection. You should get one and see if it is right for you or not. Im surprised that the X3 doesn't have a compression/sustainer setting. But to say that the music NEEDS a sustain pedal is not true. Compression almost limits the peak volume and allows you to set a bar for your volume, and anything louder will go by whatever ratio you set. Thats why you will see compression 2:1, 3:1, 8:1, etc. If you have a rack setup, I would suggest getting a inexpensive used compressor. It will have more settings than a typical footswitch, and most people don't turn compression on and off during a song. You can probably pick one up on Ebay or Craigslist for about $50. You can probably get a Boss Comp/Sus for around the same price, maybe $60. They are great little boxes, and are ideal for ease of use, portability and sturdyness. The sustain aspect of the pedal will probably not come into use for the music you are playing, but the compression can have an effect. Compression can take some of the dynamics out of your music. It sounds like you already have pro gear... you might as well either go to guitar center and get one (30 days to return... just make sure of that with electronics) or just get a used one on Ebay. If you don't like it off Ebay, you can probably sell it for around what you just paid for it minus the shipping.
The rack compressor is a little better. Mine has compression, limiting and gate. Each effect is seperate on the unit. Gate is like a noise supressor. Limiting is making an absolute peak volume, and compression is what I explained above. Its nice to have the options. I do use the gate and compressor... not the limiter.
