i need to install a 4x6 joist to a masonry wall (existing 4x8x16 block), what kind of hanger should i use?
Depends on the load it will carry or whether it's decorative.
If it's decorative, almost anything will do which could hold the weight of the joist itself and nothing more -- thicker sheet metal with zamacs fasteners could be done.
If it's carrying any kind of load, then you'll want to do one of three things more than likely:
1) Put it THROUGH the masonry, so the masonry supports the weight.
2) Build a wood frame under it for support.
3) Build a steel frame (probably not in your case).
The problem you will run into is not with the hanger itself, but with the fasteners. Most fastener/hanger systems into masonry will not hold much weight. This is because the masonry and fastener will pull apart, potentially breaking the masonry, and down comes your joist.
If it's a complex issue, you will want to hire a structural engineer who is trained in stress and load calculations.
