I recently purchased an Ibanez acoustic/electric and now need to replace the strings. So, I went to the local music store and asked for the guy behind the counters' opinion as to what strings to buy as I had never purchased them for an acoust/electric before... just acoustic. He gave me some Martin Strings that were 80/20 bronze for an acoustic guitar. Took 'em home, strung my guitar and the G string (lol) snapped. ok it's happened... go back to the store get another set of strings to only have it snap again... now I know I'm blonde, but could it be the strings that I'm using or is it something else? I've strung an acoustic guitar for about five years now, so I can't imagine I'd make the same mistake twice in a row... help please! Thank you.
Chances are it is NOT the strings. I've never had a Martin string snap. Period. I suspect you have a burr somewhere, possibly stuck in the nut or saddle that is actually cutting the string. Examine the little grooves and make sure they are free from any debris. Next, move to the tuning peg. If the edge of the hole has somehow been worn to a sharp edge, it could be the culprit. You failed to mention where the string breaks so this is difficult to diagnose. Finally, take your guitar to the shop where you bought the strings and ask one of them to do it. Good luck!
