Phosphor Bronze Light

Is this string okay to put on the acoustic guitar?
I've had silvertone sd50 guitar for about six years but I really haven't learn to play it till now, so I haven't thought much about changing the strings. There seems to be really no problem with it except the coloring, but I am just a beginner so I thought I could be wrong. So, I've been looking at different strings to replace the old ones with, and I came across D'Addario EJ16-3D Phosphor Bronze Acoustic Guitar Strings Light, and I was wondering if this would be a smart replacement. If I change the weight of the string, would the sound change dramatically? (negatively or positively ?). Right now I have medium gauge, bronze Martin SP (...I've kept the strings that came with the guitar). Thanks in advance! ![]()

New strings are the absolute cheapest way to improve the sound of your guitar. There are different metallic compositions that can give you varying tone....here is D'Addarios tone chart: http://store.daddario.com/category/144846?language_id=1¤cy_id=1
Six years is way to long to go without changing strings! You'll find that a set of strings goes through a life-cycle of a few months....maybe more depending on how often you play. They start out sounding very bright (sometimes too bright) Then they settle in to a slow decline in brightness, until they start sounding dull. Eventually, they get hard to tune. This happens long before you start to see discoloration.
The strings you've selected are good strings. The fact is that at this point, ANY string is going to make your guitar sound better. You're going to immediately notice that the guitar sounds bright and jangly. Even your low notes will have bright overtones. This is a good thing. Since you're moving to a lighter gauge string, they'll be easier to press. There is a small chance that the decrease in tension from lighter strings will have an effect on your truss rod adjustment....lower tension will allow your neck to bow backward, which might lower the strings height too much. Don't worry about that until you try the strings.
In general, lighter strings will have a slight decrease in volume and not as good bass response as medium strings. Since your old strings were so dead, you probably won't notice any change in volume.
You've chosen very good strings, my only criticism is that you're committing yourself to 3 sets. If you don't like the strings, where's the savings? I know you'll find they make a vast improvement in the tone of your guitar because your present strings are dead.....but it can be useful to experiment. I use Martin SP lights and am very happy with them....but I'm still experimenting.
