I got a used acoustic guitar recently and I feel that I should change the strings. I have a guide on how to do it I'm just not sure which guitar string should go where from the new ones that I have. The strings came with the guitar and some of them have like "2nd B .016" - .41mm" I'm assuming that would go on the 2nd string but there are others that say like ".013 plain" ".012 (.30mm)" and "18p". I have no clue what to do with these. Can anyone explain?
It sounds like the strings that yo got with the guitar are from 2 different types of sets, medium, and light gauge. This can definitely be confusing and you may not actually have a complete set of strings. The easiest way to remedy this is to go to your local music store and buy a new set of light or extra light gauge steel strings. This way you will be sure to have the whole set of the right gauge strings. A standard extra light gauge set of acoustic steel string will be as follows;
.010 = high E
.014 = B
.023 = G (wound, not plain)
.030 = D
.039 = A
.047 = low E
This is from a set of Martin Marquis extra light gauge acoustic guitar strings. A light set will have a slightly higher number per string (A light gauge high E is usually a .012) Notice that the G string is a wound string not a plain string. This is standard for all acoustic guitar sets.
The fact that there are a .013 and a .018p could be that these are from a medium gauge set or even from an electric guitar set that has been mixed in with the strings you have. Go by the chart that I have given you and see if you have a full set of strings of a similar gauge. If not, than buy a new set just to be on the safe side.
