Guitar strings (steel) sound fine with no capo but dull with one?
I put new strings on a few weeks ago. I play for fun and practice about half an hour a day. The strings are in tune and sound great on their own. When I put a capo on they sound very dull (they don't ring or buzz, just sound dull) Mostly strings 2-5 and I notice it more the closer to the head I put it, it is really bad on the first fret. I got a pretty cheap capo (maybe 6 bucks?) because I wasn't sure if I was going to stick with it.
Why do they sound dull? Do I need a better capo?
I don't mind buying a new capo if it is needed...But I'd like to spend as little money as possible...any cheap suggestions if this is necessary?

If you are having trouble coughing up the money for a better one - Why not try making one out of rubber bands, string piece of pipe? OR?
One other idea comes to mind but I can't be sure from your question - Bad strings, but I doubt it.
