Nickel wound guitar strings, why is nickel used and not other metals? scientifically speaking, not sound wise?
Electric guitars need to use a material that is ferromagnetic in order that the magnetism-based pick-ups function properly.
There are few metals on the periodic table that exhibit ferromagnetism...they are iron, cobalt, nickel and neodynium.
Cobalt is too toxic to use on guitar strings. Neodynium is too expensive and has too extreme of ferromagnetism.
You mostly see iron and nickel in the strings of electric guitars. Iron is very common for obvious reasons...more often it is actually steel rather than pure iron (pure iron isn't strong enough). Nickel is often used to enhance the steel alloy, especially if it is desired to make a low-pitch guitar string, since Nickel is denser than iron.
On a bass guitar (a guitar that has the first four strings of a regular guitar bass-shifted one octave in frequency)...either you use Nickel to make the strings more dense to get a better linear density, or you make the strings greater diameter. And you will find that both practices are common.
Accoustic guitars can use any material...as it is the air cavity of the hollow body that amplifies thier sound...rather than their sound being converted into audio electronic signals.
Steel still is popular for use in accoustic guitars...especially to get the sound of folk or cowboy-like music.
Nylon is popular in a different style of accoustic guitars...the kind often used in playing Spanish classical music and flamenco.
Nylon is quite low density...so it works well for the three highest frequency strings. But the low frequency strings need better linear density to have the same tension in all strings (otherwise you detrimentally torque the guitar neck). Usually Silver is used to enhance the linear density of nylon-string guitars' lower three strings.
