What Size Guitar String Gauges Do I Have?
I am sorry if this is a stupid question, but I am new to the acoustic guitar (just started playing 2 days ago) and I am very confused about something. I purchased the Fender Squier SA-100 and I did not know what type of strings it came with. I searched online and saw that it came with: Fender 60L Phosphor Bronze, Gauges 12 to 52. What does that mean? Do I have 12 gauge strings? What does the 52 mean?
Also, I was wondering this because my left fingers are being put through torture. Should I get lighter gauges? I expect some discomfort but I think it may be better for a beginner like me to get lighter gauges. If so, what size should I get?
just work through the discomfort and you'll do fine.
12's are pretty common for acoustics. They provide a richer, fuller sound; which is great for acoustics.
I play with 9's myself, but that's only because I like to bend the strings a lot and I play a lot of lead on an electric guitar.
The unofficial rule is:
thicker gauge (10-12) = rhythm
thinner strings (8-9) = lead (though i've never seen anyone play with 8's. That's really really thin)
