I just acquired a Smith & Wesson Hand Ejector Model of 1899 in .38 Special (the first gun made in that caliber) manufactured in about 1902. The nickel finish is oxidized to a black color over about 75% of it, but the metal is smooth and there is no visible rust. The cylinder doesn't lock up perfectly but there is some minimal rotational movement and almost no back and forth movement in the locked up position. Would you still take it to a gunsmith before firing? How much can I expect a basic safety inspection to cost? I don't intend to fire it often at all. Just the occasional trip to the range (around 50 rounds usually). I am a collector and occasionally like to shoot my firearms. I've never had one inspected, though, and I was hoping for some friendly and preferably trained advice. Thanks in advance. P.S., I'm not going to strap it to a tire and pull the trigger with a string, so don't even suggest it. The gun is sufficiently rare I want to treat it well.
I think it would do some good to get it checked just in case you missed something. You walk into a place with a rare beauty like that I'm sure they would love to inspect it for free. I took in my grandfather MK 6 in and they didnt even charge me they were so happy to see a rare revolver. Even if they dont it wont cost that much in VA it was like $20 for this old Luger a buddy of mine took in. If you want to treat her right get her looked at, better safe than sorry.
