As with everyone else I get tons of these bottles every year and I would love to be able to melt them and cast them into other plastic items..as said earlier,guitar picks is one idea,or maybe a golf tee.
Whatever you do, please don't try to flame mely it as that will release dangerous toxic chemicals into the air and that wont eb any good for you who is melting it. I think the best idea is actually to bring it to a recycling plant but I admire your idea. That would be really recycle friendly and guitar picks sound so class, you never know, you could sell them for 50p on a stall or something and make money out of it as well as saving the world. You'd need a lot of heat however, and I would say use a gas flame with you wearing a gas mask!!!
Anyhow, I love the idea of melting it down to turn into something useful. My advise would be dont do it flame on plastic, have a means like water between it, and be very aware of dangerous fumes. Is the plastic, a Smart Alloy? Ive tried to find out in the last hour. If it is, just 100 degree C water (placing it inside) would be enough to change the plastics shape.

I say however, if you find you venture impossible, you could try to get milk delivered in glass bottles, as glass is recylclable and you wouldnt have to worry about it as they pick the milk bottles up for you. Ha ha, if you find a way please tell me. : D
