Have you seen cockatoos eat lemons?
(Australia): my lemon tree is loaded with lemons, just starting to get yellow, and lately cockatoos have been picking dozens, mostly green ones, and eating a big hole in them, then dropping the damaged ones on the ground. One even flew off with one in his beak. I put out a scarecrow this morning: hope it works.
I used to have a pet cockatoo; they are amazing birds. Mine once belonged to Prime Minister Harold Holt who disappeared in the surf in the 1960's.
I have talked to someone here who has seen them eating lemons and oranges.
Are there any other birds that do?
During the entire time that I stayed in Australia, I never saw a cockatoo (or any other bird) show an interest in lemons much less eat them. But I have seen them attack the vegetable garden with glee! I find cockatoos very inquisitive and destructive (a few Aussies I know consider them as pests descending on their backyards). I was able to befriend a few who were not too shy about getting near arm's reach for a feed. The sight of these birds in flight is to me awesome! I particularly love to see them perched on the trees or the porch rail with their crests all spread out in majestic glory and their round eyes eagerly waiting for a chance to feed on the seeds laid out for the birds.. Australia will always be a very special place for me because of the beautiful birds- the Rainbow Lorikeets, the King Parrots, the Rosellas and the "regular" mother kookaburra who regularly tapped on the kitchen glass window to let you know she's around so I can hand feed her with some fresh meat. What a beautiful country Australia is!
