Picking out a bass guitar?
Hey this question is alittle long, but if can answer what you can that'd be great:
Short Scale vs. Long Scale bass:
1) whats the difference?
2) what are the pros and cons of each?
3) why does everyone speak so bad of short scales?
4) would you consider this a good short scale: http://www.guitarcenter.com/Gretsch-Guitars-G2202-Electromatic-Junior-Jet-Bass-Guitar-100602747-i1320394.gc
5) can you become develop a good slap sound on a short scale bass? specifically the gretsch above.
6) i'm looking for a really funky sound, would a short scale work?
4, 5 and 6 string basses:
1) does the six string offer the best variation in sound?
2) would anyone ever get a 5 string considering you can just get a 6 string instead?
I just got a gretsch electromatic and i'm really enjoying it, but i've just read a whole bunch of slander about short scales and that there never as good as longer ones, i do have time to return the bass but is the extra length really that much better?
Really I have a 5 string long scale bass. For some reason long scale basses just appeal to me. I've never really heard anyone speak badly of short scale basses. Actually my friend plays one and she loves it.
And some people slap differently. I slap down past the finger board, and pickups. And others slap on the fingerboard.
But for that Gretsch I think you would get a decent sound out of it judging by the pickups and fingerboard.
I like 5 strings because of the sound variation. I really like the low B that it has. But I'm content with 5 because you can do so much with just that. And I don't think my small hands could do well with a 6 string bass.
I also have a short scale, 4-string, Martin Bass BUT I prefer the sound that my long scale bass gives me. And it sounds better when I slap and pop. Because when I slap on my short scale bass it gets knocked out of tune easier. A long scale just feels different in your hands.
But I think extra length is better. I really do. But if you're comfortable with your bass then just keep it.
