What is the difference between Elixir light and custom light acoustic guitar strings for my Epiphone acoustic?
As a semi-new acoustic player, I've asked around and have been told that Elixir light strings are best for my acoustic. However, what is best - custom light or light? Also, which is better out of the nanoweb and polyweb? Thanks!
Coated strings has very little, if anything at all, to do with what is best for the guitar - it's about strings and how long your strings will last. The price and quality of the instrument has little to do with whether or not you'll be using these strings.
What I've found, and what others say also, is that coated strings may last up to 3 to 4 times longer than regular strings. So it may make sense then to spend the extra sum on coated strings.
Elixir claims that:
Original polyweb coating "Has a balanced tone and smooth response. Feels comfortably smooth and reduces finger squeak."
Ultra-thin nanoweb coating "Has the bright tone and punch of non-coated strings. Feels like traditional strings."
The nanoweb coating is thinner, and you will have to test both to find what suites you better. I do think the heavier polyweb coating dampens the vibrations a little bit more.
I would advice you to try out coated as well as uncoated and find what you like the best. You will need to have the exact same gauge (string thickness) on the sets, as heavier and lighter sets will sound and play differently. And yes, the custom light is a lighter set.
