Why does my stereo drain my battery?
I had a friend install a new stereo in my car. I also installed a new battery at the same time because the old one was worn out. Every since then if I don't start my car every day, the battery is dead. I suspect the stereo because everything else is in perfect working order. I did notice that the power button on stereo stays lit all the time. Is that normal? Or is the stereo on standby and doesn't fully shut off draining my battery?
That sounds correct. Because he connected the yellow wire, and the stereo would come on but not have sound or play a cd. So he connected both yellow and red wires togeather.
Should the red wire be directly connected to the battery?
Car stereos have two power wires. One requires very little power and is supposed to be hooked directly up to the battery (a constant power source).
The other is to be connected to a switched source that only gets power when the ignition is on.
It sounds like your friend may have connected both power wires to a constant source which will slowly drain the battery over time.
