what is the difference betwwen distortion and fuzz?
I'm a big classic rock fan and my band is about to start recording and I cant decide on getting a fuzz face or like a boss distortion pedal? which is better and what is the difference?
There's really no "better" when it comes to sounds. It's just what you like.
Fuzz is a kind of distortion. It has a sound like...Eric Clapton comes to mind, and Cream. It's kind of a warm, round, full distortion ("fuzzy", that's where the name comes from), and can be heard as the distortion used with alot of 60s/70s British bands, as well as grunge.
Distortion is a crunchy sound that ranges from giving a clean tone a bit of an edge all the way to such a massive amount of distortion that you can barely make out the notes, and it sounds like a growl or an engine.
To decide what to get, go down to your local music store or find someone who has them, and just try them out to see what sound fits what you like best. All different kinds of distortion was used in classic rock, from the aforementioned fuzz in Cream, Led Zeppelin, to searing sounds like the Scorpions and Van Halen.
