I have a horse called buster he is 17.6hh Gelding cob/thoroughbred palomino 1999
He is a racehorse and I have had him for 6 years now and I adore him and lovehim to bitss x
Everytime I do agility or sports games or I take lead file on my lesson when we come to a halt and we wait for a while he starts backing up and circling and when It comes to agility he gets giddy and gallops off when we are only meant to do it in canter and trot x
He is a star at cross country and jumping and the highest we have both ever jumped has probably been 6.2 max
Can you give me some advise on keeping him under control and at a steady speed and to keep him calm x. Please help got rider of the year coming up please help xxxx <333
Hello,
Lots of horse owners have problems much like this one, but only a few actually do anything about it. This is because it can take a lot of work. I'll try to be brief in my suggestions.
First, Buster is acting out because he is nervous, excited, and feels your emotions. He also has extra energy. You want to be as calm as you can, because he feels your emotions. Yawn, stretch, laugh, and relax. You should also work with him with standing still. Get him to stand still at your home. This means nosteppingg forward or backwards. Keep him Still. Both in the saddle and when on the ground. Work on his speeds. He should only ever go the speed You want him to go. If he ever goes faster than that, use one rein to pull his head to the side(he can't keep running forward this way) get him to stop. Walk or spin a few circles or change directions. Make sure your in control again before picking up speed. There are also a few herbs and vitamins that help calm horses. Calming herbs used for horses include valerian, black cohosh, passion flower, hops and ginger root. All of these herbs are known to induce relaxation. Most of the natural calming supplements contain some blend of B-vitamins. B-vitamins are the vitamins to help the body handle nervous tension and stress. Thiamine is the most commonly added B-vitamin to natural calming supplements. This will probably take time and energy to accomplish fixing his little "problem" but with determination you will get there with him.
I wish you luck!
