Acoustic Guitar Strings

do acoustic guitar strings work on an electric guitar?
i have both electric and acoustic guitars and one of the strings on my electric one broke. will my acoustic string work as a temporary alternative? and how much do electric guitar strings cost?
If it's one of the unwound (treble) strings, then you may substitute one for the other. The bass strings have different type of windings and don't mix that well.
You don't really harm the instrument - it just really don't mix well as they are made for different purposes.
You should however be aware of the fact that acoustic strings usually ar heavier/thicker than electric guitar strings. In that respect, you will need a little caution.
As for price, it is better to do a search on one of the brands, like http://www.daddario.com/ to get a feel for the prices - they don't vary that much.
And since you're asking, I do perhaps get a feeling you don't change that often ... something you really should do. More than two-three months max if you play regularly, and the strings are dead. Coated strings may last longer, but they are a bit more expensive.
Change strings as often as you can afford and remember to clean strings and guitar after each time you play.
