NEED HELPP!! Any suggestions for a kickass electric guitar at 500 or under?
I play a Fender California Series Sonoran SCE California Custom Dreadnounght Acoustic/Electric but i am looking for a electric guitar. I am looking for one under 500 but it needs to be quality and if you have experience with that guitar that would be awesome.
It depends largely on the sort of music you play, but there are tons of great guitars in your price range. The best thing you could do is go to a guitar store and test drive a bunch of them, since each one will have its own sound and feel. Ibanez and Fender, for instance, have thin necks, whereas Epiphones tend to have chunky necks. They're all great guitars, but they play very differently.
My current favorite is the Ibanez AFS75T, which is a thin hollowbody with a Bigsby vibrato. I bought one about a year ago because it's great for playing everything from roots rock to punk. I've always been partial to Fender and Ibanez guitars, since I have small hands and the necks are really comfortable to me. Also, they're built like rocks and the ones I've had for 20 years are still going strong. The AFS75T sounds incredible with and without effects and it plays like a dream. I've been playing Fender Telecasters for years for the same reasons I love the Ibanez hollowbody. With effects, I can achieve any sound I want, and the body shape is very user-friendly. I tried playing a Stratocaster, but the body contours made me sort of lose track of the guitar during live shows (it's more wiggly). Most Fender electrics are highly adaptable and reliable. Plus, they're classics, so they never lose value.
The Epiphone Les Pauls are really cool, as well. They sound and play just like their expensive Gibson cousins, but cost a fraction of the price. And they've got that classic humbucker crunch, but also sound good played clean. For me, the big drawbacks are the fat necks and extreme weight of them. If you're used to playing acoustic, the chunky neck probably wouldn't be a problem. But I've known lots of guitarists who had back trouble after playing Epiphones or Les Pauls for years. I've got an Epiphone Les Paul and I love it to death, but I can only play it for short periods of time because I've got small hands and the weight is a little much for me (smallish female).
If you go to a guitar store, I'm sure you'll find one guitar that just feels like it belongs in your hands. Trust your instincts, since those are more valuable than anyone else's opinion. If you find the perfect mix of sound and feel for you, you'll still be in love with your guitar decades from now, when it's just starting to feel broken-in. Good luck!
