Get the sound of the Edge with Epiphone SG?
How can I get the (classic/trademark-mainly from earlier songs) sound of The Edge from U2 with my epiphone sg and a very small budget ?? (around 300- Aus $ max)
also, if necessary my amp is a randall rx series which cost around $120
(think it was also on sale) it has no reverb or effects, but has distortion and of course clean as well as eq and a place to plug in ipod/mp3
Also, if anyone might know, I dont actually know which model it is. It is a yellow colour with either a glossy pattern, or you can see the wood under (shiny!!), it has no pickguard, cost from around $500-800 (AUS)(it was on sale) and says hand made in china on the back of the neck. I cant find any pics on internet or info about it!!!!!!!!!!!
(by dont know what model it is, i mean guitar!!!! I just know its an epiphone sg)
I'm not sure about the model of SG but I can help you with the sound:
You need a delay pedal (I assume you don't have one) to acheive the "Edge sound". I use a Digitech Hardwire Delay/Looper which costs about 120 British pounds (it's more expensive than most delay pedals but it shouldn't be over your budget in Australian dollars and it's really worth that money).
It's an Excellent pedal, it's built like a tank and it sounds like a dream, anyway lets get to the sound tips:
You need a clean sound using the bridge pickup (I'm basing this on "Where the Streets have no Name"), it should be bright and "chimey" with no sign of distortion, it'll take a bit of experimenting as guitars and amps vary in sound but you'll get there.
Set the delay to repeat roughly 2 to 3 times, the speed is tricky to describe, a lot of sources quote it in milliseconds which can be fairly confusing (some delay pedals have digital displays of the delay speed), heres a lesson video on youtube, it's for a different song but the delay speed demonstrated is roughly the same (Maybe a bit faster), just so you have an idea:

Another point is that The Edge uses a slight chorus effect in his sound and some delay pedals have a "modulated delay" which does exactly that (including the pedal mentioned above).
Thats about it in simple terms, check out the first of the websites below if you want more complex details (It's practically an enclyclopedia of details of the Edges sound)
I hope this helps
