Why do ballerenas, "point" their pointer finger when dancing? I don't think it's beautiful or elegant.
When watching ballet, I see the dancers do that, all the time. It looks as if, they're trying to point something out instead of, being elegant or lovely, like that kind of dancing in my opinion, ought to. I don't like it, one bit.
Classical ballet positions include positions of the fingers along with everything else. Balanchine's choreography, in particular, has very specific placement of the fingers. So unless you're talking about non-professionals who don't know the correct positions, you should be seeing ballet dancers hold their hands so that there is spacing between all their fingers, depending on the move.
"Balanchine hands" are, indeed, very stylized, but the index finger is not held in a pointing position relative to the other fingers. Then again, stepping around on the point of your toes is very stylized, too. However, what you're describing does not sound typical of all ballet.
